DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Postal Service will issue Bald Eagle: Hatchling to Adult\, a new set of commemorative postage stamps. The first-day-of-issue outdoor event IS FREE and open to the public. The Hon. Daniel M. Tangherlini\, U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors\, will serve as the dedicating official. The ceremony is planned to last around 45-minutes and there will be several speakers. \nUSPS staff will begin selling the Bald Eagle: Hatchling to Adult stamps 1 hour before the ceremony at 10a.m. outside the National Eagle Center\, along with an autograph session after the ceremony. First day cancel will be available for collectors. \nQ&A With Ornithologist David Allen Sibley (2 p.m.)This will be also be a FREE event to attend\, and YOU have the opportunity to submit any questions you have for Mr. Sibley in advance. It’s only natural for him to be a birder as he’s the son of Fred Sibley a Yale ornithologist and has been birding since his childhood in Connecticut. \nWith The Sibley Field Guide to Birds\, a New York Times bestseller\, Sibley was immediately hailed as heir to the great birder and artist Roger Tory Peterson\, placing him in a long line of artist-naturalists that leads straight back to John James Audubon Used by millions of birders\, from novices to the most expert\, The Sibley Guide to Birds is the standard by which natural history guides are measured. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 16th at 2pm\, Sara Thielen will discuss “Medicine in Western Wisconsin during the Frontier Days” at Castlerock Museum in Alma\, Wisconsin. \nThe frontier days were dangerous times. Injuries from hunting and farming happened without cell phones to call for an ambulance. Without a pharmacy\, there was no way to purchase medicine to bring down a child’s fever or soothe a cough. Doctors were in very short supply\, if they existed at all in the area. So\, what did the people who lived in the communities along the Mississippi River and the surrounding rural communities do when their lives were in danger? \nSara Thielen is the Public Health nurse with Buffalo County Public Health. In her spare time\, she reads and studies history. She has combined her love of nursing\, history\, and Western Wisconsin in this presentation. She will explore the different diseases and common medical treatments of the past. It might not be a surprise that it wasn’t much different than today. \nAdmission is $8 for adults and $5 for students and free for members. Seating is limited. Reservations can be made by contacting the museum at 608-685-4231.

Wilson is enrolled on the Sicangu Oyate (Rosebud) reservation in SouthDakota\, and is a Mdewakanton descendent. She lives near the St. Croix River in Minnesota\, where she cares for an Indigenous seed garden\, native perennials for pollinators\, and a Tamarack bog. All are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Minnesotans 16 or older who take a child 15 or younger fishing don’t need a license on this special weekend. \nSo plan a special fishing day or weekend and catch some quality time with friends and family. \nShore fishing is a great way to enjoy a day at the lake. It’s easier\, cheaper and there’s a lot more room and opportunities for great fishing spots. \nA good\, safe spot to start fishing is on a nearby fishing pier. You can find fishing piers on lakes and in many parks throughout Minnesota. \nIf you’re going to fish from shore\, you’ll likely have to explore a bit to find the fish. Fish tend to stay in one spot so you have to move and cast along the shoreline to find them. \nSpring is the best season to catch fish due to the fish being hungry after the long winter\, being more active due to warmer waters and laying their eggs near shore. As soon as the ice has melted off the lakes\, sunfish and crappies are great species to seek. \nSummer shore fishing is a little more difficult due to thick near shore vegetation and fish moving to deeper\, cooler waters away from shore.
