DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Postal Service will issue Bald Eagle: Hatchling to Adult\, a new set of commemorative postage stamps. The first-day-of-issue outdoor event IS FREE and open to the public. The Hon. Daniel M. Tangherlini\, U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors\, will serve as the dedicating official. The ceremony is planned to last around 45-minutes and there will be several speakers. \nUSPS staff will begin selling the Bald Eagle: Hatchling to Adult stamps 1 hour before the ceremony at 10a.m. outside the National Eagle Center\, along with an autograph session after the ceremony. First day cancel will be available for collectors. \nQ&A With Ornithologist David Allen Sibley (2 p.m.)This will be also be a FREE event to attend\, and YOU have the opportunity to submit any questions you have for Mr. Sibley in advance. It’s only natural for him to be a birder as he’s the son of Fred Sibley a Yale ornithologist and has been birding since his childhood in Connecticut. \nWith The Sibley Field Guide to Birds\, a New York Times bestseller\, Sibley was immediately hailed as heir to the great birder and artist Roger Tory Peterson\, placing him in a long line of artist-naturalists that leads straight back to John James Audubon Used by millions of birders\, from novices to the most expert\, The Sibley Guide to Birds is the standard by which natural history guides are measured. SUMMARY:Learn about Frontier Medicine at Castlerock
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 16th at 2pm\, Sara Thielen will discuss “Medicine in Western Wisconsin during the Frontier Days” at Castlerock Museum in Alma\, Wisconsin. \nThe frontier days were dangerous times. Injuries from hunting and farming happened without cell phones to call for an ambulance. Without a pharmacy\, there was no way to purchase medicine to bring down a child’s fever or soothe a cough. Doctors were in very short supply\, if they existed at all in the area. So\, what did the people who lived in the communities along the Mississippi River and the surrounding rural communities do when their lives were in danger? \nSara Thielen is the Public Health nurse with Buffalo County Public Health. In her spare time\, she reads and studies history. She has combined her love of nursing\, history\, and Western Wisconsin in this presentation. She will explore the different diseases and common medical treatments of the past. It might not be a surprise that it wasn’t much different than today. \nAdmission is $8 for adults and $5 for students and free for members. Seating is limited. Reservations can be made by contacting the museum at 608-685-4231.

SUMMARY:Fire in the Shire
DESCRIPTION:Visit Alma\, Wisconsin on Saturday\, June 6th from 10am-4pm for Castlerock Museum’s annual Fire in the Shire event\, a citywide celebration of all things medieval. \nThe highlight of the day will be the various demonstrations taking place on the street in front of the museum. Kazimir the Hungry will be breathing fire and swallowing swords and the Wisconsin Historical Fencing Association will be doing various fighting demonstrations. There will also be ongoing displays by Clann Tartan\, A Life Medieval\, and Hangin’ with the Bard in the museum courtyard. Bardmageddon will be performing in the museum theater and One Eye Dave’s Hotdogs will provide concessions. \nVisitors interested in searching for the fabled “Holy Grail” in the shops of the shire can enter a drawing to win the treasured artifact along with $100 Alma Dollars. There will also be plenty of merry making with the Midwest Renaissance Actors Guild performing on Main Street. \nA full schedule of the days events will be available in the coming weeks. Admission wristbands are $8 for adults and $5 for students. Visitors in ancient\, medieval\, or renaissance era dress get $2 off and children four and under are free.

He spent a decade as a guitar-for-hire before picking up a mic to tell his own stories on the stage. \nSoulful and steady\, Graham’s music offers a raw introspective of the human condition that’s both painful and comforting. His guitar conveys heartbreak\, lyrics tell stories of regret\, but his rich vocal delivery offers the remedy. \nHaving brought his songs on international tours with both major label and indie acts\, Graham is challenging the notion of what it means to be a singer-songwriter. He’s driving inclusivity within the genre\, and he hopes to evoke a sense of understanding in the process. \n“I’m writing about universal experiences\,” he says. “I’m writing music to connect my story to yours\, show you all that we have in common\, and maybe help both of us feel less alone.”
