Chad Sanderson, a Wabasha native, grew up skiing Coffee Mill Ski Area. When he met his now-wife Chelsea, he introduced her to the sport. Now, Chad and Chelsea have two young kids, ages eight and five, who have also become avid skiers. We sat down with the Sandersons to learn why they spend their winter days on the ski hill.
How did you get involved with skiing at Coffee Mill?
Chad loved spending nights and weekends skiing there. He wanted the same thing for our kids. Plus, it’s a great way to get outside and moving — especially in the winter.
What is your favorite thing about Coffee Mill?
We don’t have to wait in long lines to get on the chair lift — we love that. And, with our kids on the hill, we appreciate the ski area’s smaller size. And, hanging out in the chalet is the best. We always see people we know.
Why is it important to you that your kids learn to ski?
Here’s one way to look at it. We teach our kids to swim because during the summer we love boating on the river and swimming at the beach. During the winter, which, as we know, takes up several months in Minnesota, we try to embrace the cold. It’s good to get outside and get fresh air. Skiing is a great way to do that. We try to enjoy each season in Minnesota and teach our kids to do the same.
What’s your favorite thing to eat after a day on the slopes?
We love the beer cheese soup and hot ham and cheese sandwiches from the chalet. Our eight-year-old son loves the cheeseburgers. And, we can’t leave without getting one of their hot, gooey cookies fresh out of the oven!
