WCHS and Reads Landing Brew Pub To Co-Host Oktoberfest in September Event

The Wabasha County Historical Society and Reads Landing Brewing Company are combining efforts in presenting Oktoberfest 2018. The fun-filled and informative happening will take place on Thursday evening, September 27, at 7:00.

Presently, the Reads Landing Brewing Company is the only entity brewing beer in Wabasha County. What is not known by most, however, is that during the final decades of the nineteenth century, there were as many as nine breweries dotting the landscape throughout the county. Locations of the breweries were as follows: Lake City, Millville, Minneiska, Mazeppa, Reads Landing, Wabasha, and West Albany.

The evening will start at the WCHS Museum in Reads Landing at 7:00 pm with a program titled The History of Brewing Beer in Wabasha County. Covered in the presentation will be the importance of brewing beer within the German and Irish cultures which settled so much of Wabasha County.

Additionally, attendees will learn about the following: where the breweries were specifically located, who owned the breweries, the number of barrels produced each year, as well as the effect of the Temperance Movement and the connection to the state of Minnesota with regard to prohibition.

The presentation will include photographs of breweries, brewing caves, and early brewmasters as well as that of Carrie Nation, known as “Hatchet Carrie,” and newspaper headlines celebrating the end of prohibition. Disputes between brewers as well as their demise will also be part of the presentation.

Following the presentation at the museum, attendees will travel downhill to the Reads Landing Brewing Company in which they will sample the bill of fare offered at the popular restaurant. This Oktoberfest celebration will included the following: your choice of sandwich and side to eat, a sample flight of 5 Reads Landing Brewing Company Beers, and information regarding the brewing process.
