❤️ Some monuments tell a story. Others make sure those stories are never forgotten.
This beautiful new sailor statue at Veterans Park now stands in honor of the men and women who served in the U.S. Navy and US Coast Guard —a lasting tribute made possible through the generosity of Jim and Tram Mathias.
Fifty years after Jim left Wabasha for Navy boot camp, he found a meaningful way to give back to the community that first shaped him. Inspired by Public Works Director Tony Johnson's vision for Veterans Park, Jim stepped forward to ensure this tribute became a reality.
It also serves as a reminder that preserving history takes a community. Thank you to Tony Johnson, the City of Wabasha, MN Public Works team, the Wabasha American Legion Post 50, the VFW Post 4086, Wabasha, MN, and everyone who continues to care for and improve Veterans Park so future generations will always remember the sacrifices of those who served.
And finally, congratulations to SVJ Creative Designs for the exceptional craftsmanship that brought this statue to life. We are incredibly fortunate to have artisans like them in our community. Their work doesn't simply create beautiful pieces—it preserves stories, honors service, and gives future generations a place to pause, reflect, and remember.
Some legacies are written in books. Others are cast in concrete.
