🦅✨ National Eagle Center Featured in the Star Tribune! ✨🦅
City of Wabasha, MN is soaring in the headlines! The National Eagle Center was recently featured in the Star Tribune answering a fascinating question:
What’s Minnesota’s largest raptor?
(Hint: It’s more complicated than you think!)
While bald eagles are the most common and nest here in large numbers, the article highlights the often-misidentified golden eagle — a powerful and elusive winter visitor to southeast Minnesota.
Education Director Scott Mehus shared expert insight on how to tell them apart in flight:
• White in the “wingpits”? Juvenile bald eagle.
• White on the outer wings (“wrists”)? Golden eagle.
Both species have impressive 6–7.5 foot wingspans, but Minnesota’s wintering golden eagles actually nest about 2,000 miles north in Canada. Because birds that hatch farther north tend to grow larger, golden eagles seen here may even have a slight size advantage.

🦅 Golden eagles can dive at speeds over 150 mph
🦅 Their winter hub includes the bluffs of southeast Minnesota near Wabasha
🦅 The Center partners with Audubon and researchers to track migration
🦅 111 golden eagles were counted this January during a multi-state winter survey
For 22 years, the National Eagle Center has led citizen-scientist winter counts and guided golden eagle field trips — helping people discover a bird many once thought didn’t even live here.

RJAC is bringing the high-energy, all-ages production The SpongeBob Musical to the Wabasha-Kellogg School District #811 Performing Arts Center — and it’s going to be bold, colorful, and full of heart.
This imaginative show celebrates resilience, friendship, and cooperation — values that mirror the spirit of Wabasha. By involving performers and volunteers of all ages, this production creates meaningful opportunities for creativity, connection, and shared storytelling right here in our community.
🎶 The score features music by an incredible lineup of artists including David Bowie, Sara Bareilles, John Legend, Cyndi Lauper, Panic! At The Disco, Steven Tyler & Joe Perry (Aerosmith), Plain White T’s, and They Might Be Giants, with a book by Kyle Jarrow and additional material by Tina Landau.
It’s contemporary, high-quality theatre rarely available in small communities — and it’s happening right here.
