🚂 Do you remember May 5, 2024?
We’re coming up on 2 years since the legendary steam locomotive 2816 “The Empress” roared through the Wabasha-Kellogg area… and wow, what a moment that was.
For us? We had just a few days’ notice… and let’s just say we went full-on train tracking mode 😅 watching, waiting, refreshing, and yes—stalking that locomotive as it barreled its way toward town.
And then… there it was.
Steam. Power. History.
Flying down the iron rails like something straight out of another era.
Maybe you remember our video.
Maybe you only remember the sound.
Or maybe you just remember standing there thinking, “I can’t believe I’m seeing this.” right next to us at Bruegger Memorial Park.

The 2816 “Empress” wasn’t just a train—it was part of a once-in-a-lifetime, cross-continent steam tour celebrating the historic union of Canadian Pacific and Kansas City Southern. Traveling from Canada through the U.S. and into Mexico, it connected communities, rail fans, and generations through one unforgettable journey.

Due to a unique scheduling conflict with the high school’s educational trip to Costa Rica during Riverboat Days, we are adjusting our timeline this year to ensure that all eligible students still have the opportunity to participate in this meaningful and longstanding community tradition.
This year, the Miss Wabasha Scholarship Coronation will be held in advance of Riverboat Days. This change will allow us to continue supporting student involvement, leadership development, and scholarship opportunities, while still celebrating our royalty as part of the Riverboat Days festivities.
