Home of Grumpy Old Men

“Have you seen the movie Grumpy Old Men?” Since 1993, that’s been the go-to response when someone asks where a Wabasha local is from. And, while much of the movie was filmed upriver in the Twin Cities, the fact that Grumpy Old Men takes place in Wabasha has become a defining reference point for the town ever since.

Wabasha has embraced its role as the film’s setting and turned it into a point of pride. It’s a backdrop for a classic that still connects people through humor and heart, because let’s be honest, we all know and love a grumpy old man.

Wabasha and the Movie

Today, the town of Wabasha proudly embraces its connection to the film. Visitors will find Grumpy Old Men benches scattered along our walkways and parks, themed welcome signs & photo opportunities, seasonal specials from local eateries, gifts & souvenirs, and much more.

Most notable is the annual Grumpy Old Men Festival. Held every February, the event features a variety of winter-themed activities, including ice fishing contests, a “Grumpy Plunge” into the frigid river, live music, and screenings of the film. The festival celebrates both the movie’s enduring popularity and the region’s spirited community life, drawing locals and fans from across the Midwest.

Where was Grumpy Old Men Filmed?

The movie was filmed in several locations in Minnesota, including St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Rockford. Most interior scenes, like those inside the characters’ homes and local hangouts, were shot on sound stages at Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, the creative hub of musician Prince. Filming there allowed for greater control during Minnesota’s unpredictable winters.

  • Twin Cities: Exterior shots and some scenes were filmed in the Twin Cities area, including St. Paul and Minneapolis.
  • Rockford: Ice fishing scenes were filmed on Lake Rebecca in Rockford.
  • Paisley Park: Interior scenes, including those of the main characters’ houses, were recreated on sound stages at Paisley Park in Chanhassen.
