The U.S. Postal Service will issue Bald Eagle: Hatchling to Adult, a new set of commemorative postage stamps. The first-day-of-issue outdoor event IS FREE and open to the public. The Hon. Daniel M. Tangherlini, U.S. Postal Service Board of Governors, will serve as the dedicating official. The ceremony is planned to last around 45-minutes and there will be several speakers. USPS staff will begin selling the Bald Eagle: Hatchling to Adult stamps 1 hour before the ceremony at 10a.m. outside the National Eagle Center, along with an autograph session after the ceremony. First day cancel will be available for collectors. Q&A With Ornithologist David Allen Sibley (2 p.m.) This will be also be a FREE event to attend, and YOU have the opportunity to submit any questions you have for Mr. Sibley in advance. The session will be held in the Riverfront Amphitheater and last about an hour with a rain-site available if needed. The Wabasha County Historical Society Museum in Reads Landing will celebrate opening weekend on Saturday, May 16, and Sunday, May 17. Everyone is invited to a free presentation on Sunday, May 17, at 2 p.m. featuring a local author, Goran Pesic, as he shares "The Greatest Mysteries of Lake Pepin."
The annual Spring Clean Up Event will be held on Saturday, May 16th beginning at 8am – 12pm at the Old Athletic Field (306 Hiawatha Drive West). Please be prepared with exact cash or check for your items.
On Saturday, May 16th at 2pm, Sara Thielen will discuss “Medicine in Western Wisconsin during the Frontier Days” at Castlerock Museum in Alma, Wisconsin. The frontier days were dangerous times. Injuries from hunting and farming happened without cell phones to call for an ambulance. Without a pharmacy, there was no way to purchase medicine to bring down a child’s fever or soothe a cough. Doctors were in very short supply, if they existed at all in the area. So, what did the people who lived in the communities along the Mississippi River and the surrounding rural communities do when their lives were in danger? Sara Thielen is the Public Health nurse with Buffalo County Public Health. In her spare time, she reads and studies history. She has combined her love of nursing, history, and Western Wisconsin in this presentation. She will explore the different diseases and common medical treatments of the past. It might not be a surprise that it wasn’t much different than today. Admission is $8 for adults and $5 for students and free for members. Seating is limited.
